IRS Replaces IRS2Go With a New Mobile App That Adds Secure Account Access

The IRS replaced IRS2Go with a new mobile app on September 25, 2026. The new app, simply called the IRS app, keeps the refund-status and free-filing features from IRS2Go and adds secure, account-level access that wasn’t available before.

What’s New

IRS2Go was limited. You could check a refund status and find free filing resources. That was about it. The new IRS app adds a secure login layer connected to your IRS individual online account. Once signed in, you can:

  • Check the status of refunds and amended returns
  • View your account balance
  • Make payments and review payment history
  • View certain IRS notices and letters
  • Access tax records and transcripts
  • Manage certain profile and communication preferences
  • Get or manage your Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN)

The IRS called this list a starting point. More features are expected over time.

What the App Does Not Replace

The IRS was clear about this: the app does not replace IRS.gov or your existing IRS online accounts. Full tax information, forms, guidance, and tools remain on the website. Online accounts for businesses and tax professionals also stay on IRS.gov. Right now, the app extends only select features from the individual online account. Phone and in-person help remain available for taxpayers who need it or have issues that self-service can’t resolve.

If You Already Have IRS2Go

You don’t need to download a separate app. If automatic updates are turned on, the IRS app will arrive through your normal update process. The app is free on Apple App Store and Google Play. You can also go to IRS.gov and find verified links to the official app page.

Watch Out for Look-Alike Apps and Scams

The IRS flagged scam risk specifically around this launch. The agency will never ask for sensitive personal or financial information through unsolicited texts, emails, or pop-ups. If you get a message claiming to offer IRS account access, don’t click any links. Download the app only from Apple App Store, Google Play, or through verified links at IRS.gov. When in doubt, go directly to IRS.gov and navigate from there.

Why This Matters for Small Business Owners

A few features stand out for owner-operators and small businesses filing frequently.

Payment history on mobile. If you make estimated quarterly tax payments, being able to confirm what posted without a full desktop login is useful, especially when you’re pulling records for a lender, accountant, or compliance review.

Transcripts on mobile. Tax transcripts come up a lot: SBA loans, mortgage applications, licensing, and audit situations all commonly require them. Getting them through the app adds a faster option.

IP PIN management. The IP PIN is one of the stronger identity-theft protections the IRS offers. If you’ve had a compromised return, suspicious account activity, or just want the extra layer, managing your IP PIN through the app is now an option. For gaming operators and other businesses with elevated compliance exposure, this is worth knowing.

If you have questions about your IRS account balance, how transcripts work, or whether an IP PIN makes sense for your situation, a tax advisor can walk you through it.
